In Australia, a staggering 41,000 individuals are trapped in modern slavery, predominantly women and girls, exploited in industries like textiles. Through cooperative advocacy, efforts have been made to establish a federal Anti-Slavery Commissioner and enhance enforcement regulations. These initiatives aim to ensure that victims can find support amidst the shadows of exploitation and that businesses confront and mitigate modern slavery risks head-on.
Women’s rights are inextricably linked to human rights. Sadly, many women and gender-diverse individuals in prisons face dehumanising conditions. Advocacy to abolish practices like solitary confinement and unnecessary strip searching focuses on restoring dignity and reunifying mothers with their children. The call for a Human Rights Act is central to these efforts, envisioned to ensure access to healthcare, quality education, and a safe home for all women and girls.
Women are catalysts for community-driven change. Our platform is dedicated to uplifting their voices, celebrating champions like Aboriginal advocate Aunty Vickie Roach, who helped secure voting rights for incarcerated individuals, and Theonila Roka Matbob, who fights against environmental degradation in Bougainville.
