In a tragic revelation, Tatyana Moskalkova, Russia’s human rights commissioner, stated that Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna lacked any procedural status in Russia. This raises haunting questions, particularly as there is, as yet, no information regarding the transfer of her body following her reported death in captivity.
Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, MP and Chair of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech, shared the distressing details surrounding Roshchyna’s fate. “There are currently no details on the transfer of the body of Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna. Russia has repeatedly agreed to hand it over unofficially, but each time, in the final arrangements, Viktoriia’s body was missing,” Yurchyshyn noted. This statement hints at a cruel form of psychological torture inflicted on her family.
Yurchyshyn elaborated that Moskalkova’s claims arose during an inquiry about Roshchyna’s detention, suggesting she was possibly held as a hostage. Roshchyna left Ukraine for Poland on 25 July 2023 intending to report from occupied territory but vanished on 3 August 2023.
Only in May 2024 did Russia acknowledge holding Roshchyna. Following her death in October 2024, it was confirmed that she had been subjected to severe torture, including stab wounds and electrocution, with attempts made to conceal her condition. Investigators have classified her case as a war crime coupled with premeditated murder, underscoring the gravity of this horrific narrative.
Russian human rights commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova claimed Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna had no procedural status in Russia, leading to ambiguity surrounding her death. MP Yaroslav Yurchyshyn reported that Russia has failed to provide details on her body transfer, suggesting cruel psychological torture against her family. Roshchyna’s case is now classified as a war crime after acknowledging her brutal treatment in custody.
The heartbreaking saga of Viktoriia Roshchyna illuminates the stark realities faced by journalists in conflict zones. Her case, marked by alleged brutality and inhumane treatment, reflects broader concerns regarding human rights and the treatment of individuals in captivity. As investigations continue, the global community watches, hoping for accountability and justice for Roshchyna and her family.
