Renovation of Qalaa Mosque: Revitalising Saudi Arabia’s Islamic Heritage

In the picturesque town of Al Hinakiyah, located about 102 kilometres northeast of Madinah, a remarkable transformation is underway. The second phase of Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Project for the Development of Historic Mosques has commenced with the restoration of the over-century-old Qalaa Mosque. This initiative strives to breathe new life into significant historical mosques, enhancing the Kingdom’s vibrant Islamic heritage, where the echoes of the Two Holy Mosques resonate.

The restoration project will renovate Qalaa Mosque with a keen eye for historical architectural style. An expansion will see the mosque grow from 181.75 square meters to an impressive 263.55 square meters, increasing its worship capacity to accommodate 171 visitors, a vast improvement from its previous idle state. The use of natural materials, including clay and locally-sourced wood, will ensure the mosque retains its original essence while being resilient to the local environment and the harsh desert climate.

The Qalaa Mosque in Al Hinakiyah, a significant historical mosque, is undergoing restoration as part of Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s initiative to revitalise historic places. The project aims to enhance its size and capacity while retaining traditional architectural styles and materials, promoting Saudi Arabia’s Islamic heritage.
