MUMBAI: A notable celebration in the city’s cultural arena occurred on Sunday with the reopening of the PL Deshpande Maharashtra Kala Academy Complex and Ravindra Natya Mandir in Prabhadevi after extensive renovations. This revival was celebrated alongside a significant literary event—the debut of PL Deshpande’s renowned Marathi works translated into Bengali, marking a milestone for cross-cultural literary appreciation.
The beloved playwright and humourist Pu La Deshpande, often compared to PG Wodehouse, continues to inspire many with his words, “Jagnya saathi sagle jagtat. Ravindra Natya Mandir, honouring Pu La’s artistic vision, is now equipped with an exceptional 7.1 Dolby Surround Sound system—the only one of its kind in Maharashtra—ensuring an immersive auditory experience. The revitalised venue includes 15 advanced rehearsal studios, a high-tech Chroma studio for digital productions, and upgraded green rooms, creating a world-class environment for both artists and audiences.
A representative from the academy stated, “The renovation caters to every art lover and art connoisseur. Some rehearsal slots are reserved exclusively for Marathi artistes as part of Maharashtra’s initiative to elevate the prominence of Marathi language and culture.” While rooted in Marathi culture, the complex aims to become a vibrant multilingual artistic hub featuring exhibitions, plays, and cultural events in various languages.
The grand opening hinged on a notable adaptation: the release of “Vyakti ani Valli,” one of PL Deshpande’s masterpieces, in Bengali for the first time. Excitement surged as the academy spokesperson shared, “Marathi has recently been recognised as a classical language, and we are excited to bring its literature to a broader audience.” This adaptation will premiere at the PuLa Mahotsav on March 3, followed by a Women’s Art Festival on March 4.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis officiated the grand reopening, joined by dignitaries such as Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar.
