A nationwide economic blackout is set for Friday, initiated by the People’s Union USA, highlighting consumer boycotts against major retailers. From March 7 to 14, shoppers will abstain from purchasing at Amazon, while from March 21 to 28, there will be a focus on Nestle products. Further boycotts include Walmart from April 7 to 14 and a secondary blackout on April 18th.

The movement is poised to continue with subsequent boycotts against General Mills from April 21 to April 28, and more rounds of withholding purchases from Amazon and Walmart in May. Target’s boycott is slated for June 3 to 9, followed by a prohibition on McDonald’s from June 24 to 30. Those needing to shop during these times are encouraged to support local businesses instead.

John Schwarz, founder of The People’s Union, emphasises that this initiative represents more than a singular protest day. “The People’s Union USA is not just about one day, it’s about creating a long-term strategic action.” Experts are sceptical about the immediate financial impact but acknowledge the importance of raising consumer awareness.
