Addressing Technology’s Impact on Human Rights Defenders at HRC58

At the 58th UN Human Rights Council, ILGA World will co-host a pivotal side event entitled “Protection of Defenders Against New and Emerging Forms of Technology-Facilitated Rights Violations.” This gathering will bring together advocates and organisations to explore the challenges human rights defenders face due to new technologies. The event will be held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM CET, with discussions primarily in English.

ILGA World and 14 organisations will convene at the 58th UN Human Rights Council to discuss technology’s impact on human rights defenders. Amid rising threats alongside the benefits of technology, the event will address gaps in protection and highlight the need for comprehensive state action. This initiative forms part of the 25th anniversary of the UN Declaration on Human Rights Defenders, focusing on urgent digital and human rights issues.

This side event aims to shed light on both the advantages and dangers of technology for human rights defenders, urging states to acknowledge their obligations in safeguarding these advocates. By highlighting the specific challenges posed by digital innovations, the event seeks to shape future resolutions and policy responses that better protect human rights in the digital age.
