Laredo Public Health Partners with JJAEP to Empower At-Risk Youth Through Education

The Laredo Public Health Department is launching an initiative in collaboration with the Webb County Juvenile Justice Alternative Education Program (JJAEP) to tackle the pressing health issues confronting at-risk youth. This partnership aims to empower young individuals, equipping them with vital information and skills to navigate their health and well-being effectively. Starting from February 13, the programme will feature a series of educational sessions spread throughout the year, segmented into spring and fall semesters.

Laredo Public Health Director Dr. Richard Chamberlain highlighted that these monthly sessions will cover crucial health topics, aiming to provide continuous educational opportunities for at-risk youth. Topics planned for the spring semester include substance abuse in February, mental health in March, a repeat on substance abuse in April, and general hygiene in May. The fall semester will revisit similar themes, reinforcing the learning with focus months set for September through December.

Chamberlain noted the initiative’s objective: to furnish at-risk youth with essential knowledge and skills for making informed health decisions. He stated, “This initiative aims to equip at-risk youth with critical knowledge and life skills to make healthier choices,” emphasising the intention to mitigate risky behaviours and cultivate healthier habits among youths through educational outreach.

In this collaboration, the JJAEP also plays a significant role by providing alternative educational support to students expelled from conventional schools for severe infractions. Principal Adriana Alexander underscored the importance of this partnership, saying, “It is a great opportunity for both entities to work together to help our students.” This cooperative effort extends far beyond mere education, fostering a healthier community.

Chamberlain believes that such collaborations can leave a lasting, positive imprint on the lives of participants, guiding them through their challenges and building a healthier future. He remarked, “We believe this partnership will have a lasting, positive impact on participants, helping them navigate challenges and build a foundation for a healthier future.” This initiative clearly illustrates the importance of education and health in community development and the transformative power of teamwork aimed at supporting at-risk youth.
