In north-east Nigeria, girls and young women have endured horrific trauma at the hands of Boko Haram, where they were subjected to forced marriages and unbearable violence. After escaping this captivity, many faced arbitrary detention and neglect, yet they are now determined to reclaim their lives and future. They are sending a bold message, calling for recognition and support to help them rebuild.
Amnesty International’s significant report, ‘Help us build our lives’: Girl survivors of Boko Haram and military abuses in north-east Nigeria’, released in June 2024, unveils the chilling realities faced by over 80 survivors. The report highlights their resilience against trafficking and systemic abuses while calling attention to the urgent need for their empowerment. The EmpowerOurGirls campaign actively seeks to break the silence surrounding these survivors, encouraging them to step into the light and reclaim their voices.
To support these brave young women, Amnesty International urges Nigerians, particularly President Bola Tinubu and the government, to provide essential medical care, education, and livelihood assistance. As one survivor, EE from Maiduguri, poignantly expressed, “I want to forget that I once lived with Boko Haram. I want to come out of this camp and start all over again” – Source.
In December 2024, Amnesty teamed up with local activists in Maiduguri and Abuja to amplify the EmpowerOurGirls campaign. They collaborated to create a robust toolkit aimed at fostering action and keeping pressure on governmental authorities to advocate for the rights of these girls. This toolkit offers resources and ideas for both activists and non-activists alike, empowering individuals to champion the cause and uplift the voices of young female survivors in north-east Nigeria.
Girls in north-east Nigeria have survived severe abuses by Boko Haram, and now they are determined to reclaim their lives. A report by Amnesty International showcases their struggles and aspirations, launching the #EmpowerOurGirls campaign for support and recognition. There is a call to Nigeria’s government for essential resources to aid these survivors in their journey towards recovery and empowerment.
The plight of girls and young women in north-east Nigeria highlights the urgent need for action. As they work towards rebuilding their lives, the #EmpowerOurGirls campaign stands as a powerful call for their rights, encouraging the Nigerian government to provide necessary support. By raising awareness and taking action, we can collectively help these survivors find their strength and claim their futures.
