The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called on YouTube to swiftly remove an episode featuring influencer Ranveer Allahbadia due to alleged offensive remarks. According to a complaint received by the rights panel, the show titled ‘India’s Got Latent’, hosted by Samay Raina, has been condemned for its inappropriate and obscene commentary that negatively impacts Indian society.
Priyank Kanoongo, a member of the NHRC, stated that the video disseminates harmful ideologies that promote negativity, religious intolerance, and disrespect towards women and children under the guise of free speech. He stressed that such content not only corrupts societal values but also breaches various legal provisions under the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCO) Act, and the Information Technology (IT) Act.
The NHRC argues that the episode infringes on fundamental rights related to religious freedom and the dignity of women and children, as protected by the Indian Constitution. Kanoongo highlighted that certain episodes have featured YouTubers making inappropriate remarks regarding these vulnerable groups, which is alarming given the accessibility of such content across platforms like YouTube and Instagram.
Considering the serious nature of the allegations, the NHRC has formally acknowledged the situation under the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993. They have directed YouTube to remove the episode urgently and requested the details of the channel and videos involved be shared with police authorities for further investigation.
The surge of complaints follows Allahbadia’s remarks during the show, which aimed at humor but backfired, prompting widespread backlash. In response to the criticism, Allahbadia admitted on social media that his comments were inappropriate and not amusing, reflecting on the potential harm caused by thoughtless statements in a public forum.
The NHRC has urged YouTube to remove an episode with Ranveer Allahbadia due to allegedly offensive remarks detrimental to Indian society. The coalition cites violations of multiple legal protections regarding the dignity of women and children. Following public outcry, Allahbadia has acknowledged the inappropriateness of his comments, raising questions about content regulation in the digital landscape.
The NHRC’s intervention emphasizes the importance of responsible content creation on social media platforms and the need for mechanisms to protect vulnerable groups from derogatory remarks. As the conversation around free speech versus responsible discourse continues, the public remains vigilant against media that may propagate harmful ideologies. The incident serves as a reminder of the significant impact influencers can have on societal perceptions and values.
