The Darjeeling Ecotourism and Cultural Festival is returning for its second edition from February 7 to 9 at Ahal Ground in Sittong III, Kurseong. Organized by the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA), this festival aims to highlight the region’s cultural richness and eco-friendly tourism initiatives, fostering an appreciation for rural tourism, local homestays, and cultural traditions.
Hosted by the Sittong-III Homestay Owners’ Welfare Society, the festival emphasizes sustainable tourism while celebrating the heritage of the Darjeeling Hills. This breathtaking area encompasses Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts and is part of the Kanchenjunga Regional Tourism Circuit, which spans North Bengal, Sikkim, Eastern Nepal, and Bhutan.
Originating in the mid-1990s with Tinchuley village’s homestay movement, the region has sparked sustainable tourism initiatives that inspired similar practices across India and beyond. Enthusiastic advocates from diverse locations, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, and Bhutan, have visited to study this cultural phenomenon. Once known for its colonial-era attractions, the region has now evolved into a thriving hub for community-led tourism, revitalizing local traditions and livelihoods.
With the support of GTA Tourism and guidance from the Association for Conservation & Tourism (ACT), this festival was introduced in 2024, signifying the region’s commitment to sustainable tourism. Kicking off February 7, the opening day will feature an invigorating welcome ceremony led by Naumati Baja, an all-female musical group from Nepal, followed by a grand inauguration and lively cultural displays.
On the second day, attendees can enjoy various activities such as birdwatching, rock climbing, and local culinary contests, including a memorable momo-making challenge. Visitors are also invited to explore a local market showcasing exquisite handicrafts and treats while engaging in vibrant competitions that celebrate the region’s traditions.
The final day, February 9, promises rejuvenation with yoga sessions and exhilarating games, culminating in a closing ceremony filled with cultural performances and celebratory activities.
