Mayan and Mexican Community-Based Tourism: A Blueprint for Sustainable Development

Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism
In a vibrant showcase at the 2025 International Tourism Fair in Madrid, the Government of Yucatán unveiled the “Yucatán: Mosaic of Experiences” catalogue. This initiative, born from UNESCO’s partnership, empowers Indigenous communities to create a tourism model rooted in environmental harmony and respect for cultural heritage, according to Yucatán Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena and UNESCO’s Carlos Tejada.

Community Empowerment Through Experiences
The catalogue accentuates Yucatán’s rich cultural and natural heritage while highlighting the positive effects of community-led tourism in rural Mayan communities. Díaz Mena expressed that immersive experiences, such as milpa farming and ancestral cooking, bring not just economic opportunities but also safeguard living traditions.

Engaging Cultural Activities
The catalogue features 14 unique experiences, inviting visitors to the enchanting world of Maya culture. Some highlights include:
– Casa de Barro in Uayma
– Meliponario Lool-Ha in Maní
– Ya’axche Halachó Ethnogastronomic Center
– Guardians of the Dzinintun Mangroves in Celestún
These activities allow visitors to explore protected areas and engage deeply with local customs.

Collaborative Efforts for Sustainability
Developed in cooperation with UNESCO, Airbnb, and the Co´ox Mayab Community Tourism Alliance, the catalogue serves as a strategic tool for promoting sustainable tourism. According to officials, this initiative aligns with the government’s “Capacity Building for Community-Based Tourism” program, reinforcing commitment to empower local communities.

A Model for Future Travel
The Government of Yucatán continues to advocate for sustainable community tourism, asserting that the Maya people’s traditions not only endure but also thrive. This model positions local communities at the forefront of sustainable development, creating pathways for ethical and respectful travel experiences.

Yucatán launched its “Mosaic of Experiences” catalogue at FITUR 2025 to boost community-based tourism and empower Indigenous populations. It features 14 immersive experiences that engage visitors with the region’s rich heritage. The initiative emphasizes sustainability, collaboration with UNESCO, and benefits for local communities while supporting ethical travel practices.

The Yucatán showcase at the FITUR 2025 reflects a progressive approach to community-based tourism, inviting global travelers to engage with the rich Mazaya culture. This initiative not only highlights the cultural roots of the region but fosters economic independence for local populations, demonstrating a sustainable model for future tourism endeavors.
