Human Rights Watch has unveiled its World Report 2025, highlighting a dire human rights crisis unfolding in Georgia in 2024. In June, the parliament enacted the so-called “Law on Transparency of Foreign Influence,” a law compelling NGOs and media receiving significant foreign funding to register as foreign agents. This legislation facilitates invasive reporting requirements and harsh penalties for noncompliance, profoundly threatening civil society and press freedom.
Attacks on Activists and Minority Rights
From late April to June, numerous activists faced severe assaults, resulting in major injuries, while law enforcement failed to identify attackers despite the presence of witnesses and security footage. In a further blow to equality, September saw new amendments restricting LGBT rights, stifling freedom of expression and association.
Call for Accountability
Human Rights Watch is urging Georgia’s international partners to seek an independent review into the government’s violence against protesters and consider imposing sanctions against officials complicit in the oppression.
