Call for Nominations for Peace and Human Rights Awards
In the spirit of compassion and community, the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies is inviting nominations for its esteemed awards recognizing individuals who have profoundly impacted nonviolence, peace, and human rights at the University of Rhode Island. Faculty, staff, and students alike are encouraged to seek out deserving candidates who embody these values through their groundbreaking work in research, teaching, outreach, or service.
Celebrating a Legacy of Change
Last year’s awards celebrated the inspiring contributions of graduate student Mei Mei Long, honored with the 2024 Chaplains’ Peacemaker Award, and faculty member Clarisa Carubin, who received the 2024 Human Rights Award. Their commitment to furthering peace and human rights resonates deeply within the URI community and beyond, motivating others to strive for a world free from violence and suffering.
Important Dates and Recognition Details
This year, nominations are due by January 22, 2025. Selected winners will be honored with a certificate and a $500 award during the Dr. King Unity Luncheon on January 29, alongside an opportunity to share their impactful work through a talk or article. Additionally, a $100 donation will be made in their name to Rhody Outpost, supporting the local community.
Eligibility and Encouragement to Participate
Nominations can be submitted by anyone in the URI community, including self-nominations for undergraduate and graduate students. Recipients will receive their awards in different forms: scholarships for students, professional development funds for faculty, and additional pay for staff members, reinforcing the honor’s significance.
