The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged social media platform ‘X’ to swiftly take down a controversial campaign video by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which allegedly features children actively participating in political rallies. NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo raised concerns about this practice, emphasizing the need for the Election Commission to issue guidance to political entities regarding the involvement of minors in such activities.
In letters sent to both the Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar, and Vinay Prakash, the Resident Grievances Officer of ‘X’, Kanoongo highlighted the NHRC’s substantial apprehension over children’s engagement in political promotions. The Commission is utilizing its powers under Section 12(a) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, to prioritize child welfare in political contexts.
The NHRC cited both a violation of the Election Commission’s guidelines and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, due to the political video shared by Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal. While the Model Code of Conduct for upcoming assembly elections has not yet been enacted, the NHRC deemed the situation urgent enough to warrant immediate action.
