In a heartfelt recognition of enduring bravery, the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy has awarded the prestigious 2024 Asia Democracy and Human Rights Award to Odhikar, a Bengali rights organization. This accolade shines a light on Odhikar’s relentless work in advocating for civil and political rights across Bangladesh, despite facing significant adversity such as harassment and imprisonment.
Odhikar, translating to “rights” in Bengali, was established in 1994 by renowned human rights activist Adilur Rahman Khan. The organization has diligently worked to fortify democracy and safeguard human rights, employing research, advocacy, and government oversight to create a more equitable society.
For nearly three decades, Odhikar has produced annual reports detailing human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings and forced disappearances, seeking to shine a light on these important issues. They have also been instrumental in pushing the Bangladeshi government to ratify the Rome Statute in 2010, engaging the country in addressing the plight of the Rohingya.
The award ceremony is set to take place in Taipei on December 10, where Odhikar will receive a trophy and a generous $100,000 grant. Through such recognition, the Taiwan Foundation for Democracy aims to galvanize efforts within the human rights community, reminding activists that their struggles are acknowledged and valued.

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, established in 2003, is committed to promoting democratic values worldwide and strengthening ties with other democracies. Odhikar, a key player in upholding human rights in Bangladesh, has been pivotal in raising awareness and promoting democracy through election monitoring and extensive reporting on abuses. Their tenacity not only illuminates the harsh realities faced by many but also encourages international cooperation in tackling such challenges.

The Taiwan Foundation for Democracy’s recognition of Odhikar symbolizes an unwavering commitment to human rights advocacy in challenging environments. As Odhikar continues its critical work in Bangladesh, this award serves not only as a merit for their efforts but as a beacon encouraging others in the realm of civil rights activism to persist in their noble pursuits.
