Austrian design firm Delugan Meissl Associated Architects has unveiled a stunning transformation of a former steelworks in China into the Expo Cultural Park Greenhouse. This architectural marvel, reaching a height of 35 meters, is adorned with fluid, curved glass pavilions that intertwine nature with remnants of industry. Located in Shanghai’s Pudong area, this vibrant space integrates 7,000 trees and artificial hills atop a parking structure, creating a harmonious oasis.
Originally a coal-fired power plant and steelworks, the site underwent revitalization starting in 2010. The architects ingeniously incorporated the existing steel grid framework to support an expansive 41,000-square-meter greenhouse, allowing the organic shapes to flow freely yet respect the industrial past. Founder Roman Delugan explained that the design juxtaposes the rigid structure with soft, natural forms, reflecting the yin-yang philosophy prevalent in Chinese culture.
The greenhouse comprises four main areas – an entrance building and three themed pavilions that explore various climates. The first pavilion emulates a desert landscape dotted with drought-resistant flora, while the second immerses visitors in a lush tropical rainforest. The third pavilion brims with vibrant flower gardens and serves as a flexible space for exhibitions, showcasing an array of botanical wonders.
With careful consideration for the environment, the tropical and floral pavilions are designed with natural ventilation through openings in the roofs and facades. Conversely, the desert greenhouse features adjustable vents to manage airflow as required. Visitors meander through the pavilions on a network of pathways, culminating in a terrace with sweeping views of the picturesque lake and park.
Initiated in September 2017, Shanghai’s Expo Culture Park has fostered a community connection, with the northern section welcoming guests in December 2021.
