Hoda Abdelmonem, a human rights lawyer, has been imprisoned for six years on re-fabricated charges, despite completing a previous sentence. Deteriorating health conditions and legal violations have prompted a call for her immediate release by the ‘FreeHoda’ campaign and numerous organizations. The recent recharging is seen as an infringement of legal rights, highlighting governmental overreach in Egypt’s judicial matters.
The ‘FreeHoda’ campaign demands the immediate release of Hoda Abdelmonem, a lawyer and human rights defender who has endured six years of arbitrary detention. Despite completing her previous sentence, she faces new, fabricated charges that echo her past accusations, raising concerns over her deteriorating health in confinement. On 31 October, the sixth anniversary of her detention, Abdelmonem was shocked to discover she would not be released but instead charged anew in Case No. 730 of 2020, continuing a cycle of legal injustice.
Hoda Abdelmonem was originally arrested on November 1, 2018, and subjected to enforced disappearance for 21 days. She illegally detained without family or legal communication at a security facility in Abbasiya. Since her arrest, her family has faced numerous visitation restrictions, and her medical needs have been neglected. Despite serious health issues, she remains imprisoned and charged improperly under Egyptian law, highlighting a disturbing disregard for due process.
The organizations calling for Abdelmonem’s release stress the urgent need for her freedom in light of her poor health and the legal violations associated with her case. Her ongoing detention, following the expiration of her sentence, reflects broader systemic issues within Egypt’s judicial framework, exacerbated by increasing repression against human rights defenders. This situation raises significant concerns about the state of human rights in Egypt overall as foreign partnerships proceed without adequate attention to these violations.
